Shakespeare's Globe theatre

21/03/2024

Globe theater history

Shakespeare's globe theater is located on London's lively Bankside, next to the Tate Modern Museum. The Globe Theatre's unique whitewashed walls, and dark beams certainly make it stand out from the crowd. Its design and structure created an enchanting experience for the audience, making them interact much more with the actors on scene.

The history of the Globe Theatre is as vibrant and dramatic as the plays it staged. It was originally built in 1599 by Shakespeare's playing company. However, the Globe's glory was not to last. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre had to be rebuilt primarily due to a fire that destroyed the original structure during a performance of "Henry VIII" in 1613. Despite this setback, Shakespeare and his company rebuilt the Globe using fire-resistant materials. Sadly ,during the English Civil War, the Puritans ordered the closure of all theaters, including the Globe, and for over three centuries, the theater was inactive, its legacy fading into obscurity. It wasn't until the late 20th century that the Globe was resurrected from history. In 1997, a faithful reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre opened its doors to the public. Today, the Globe Theatre stands as a living testament to Shakespeare's enduring influence on literature and the performing arts.

Romeo and Juliet workshop

Finally, after he told us a bit about the Globe Theater and Shakespeare's life, our guide Mike, took us to the rehearsal room in which we did a Romeo and Juliet workshop.

Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is a tragic love story set in Italy. The two main characters, named Romeo and Juliet, fall in love when they are supposed to be sworn enemies due to their families conficts. At the end of the story, as you probably already know, they end up killing themselfs because of a terrible misunderstanding.

Based on this story, we did some fun adaptations with Mike. But first of all we had to warm up, so we moved a bit our bodies doing two games; in the first one we were separeted in two teams, we had to put one arm behind us (in our back) and try to touch the other team hands. Now, the part that was very amusing was to watch the death of each other. Mike told us to exagerat it a lot, so it was very funny. Then, for the other game, he showed us cards and told us to memorize them to act like the number of them. For example, if you had a big number, you would have to act superior, with security… otherwise with low numbers you would have to do quite the opposite. We also tried to recognize the number of a person based on this criteria.

After these exercises, we started doing the Romeo and Juliet adaptation in pairs. It was very funny; we did the part when they die but each one of us did it differently, so we were very amused watching these different adaptations. Some of us died on top of the other, the one that was Juliet turned agressiflely Romeo to took the daga, the one that was Romeo almost fell with juliet foot, …
