Musical - Hamilton

20/03/2024

Hi my dears. On our lovely trip to Europe we went to Paris, to Lille, to London and Brussels. In London we spent 3 days visiting the city from Wednesday 20 of March to Friday 22. Wednesday morning we took the Eurostar train to go to London. Once we arrived, we visited the British Museum and then we visited the neighborhood of Buckingham Palace. At night after checking at the lodging place, we took the metro to go to a London theater. This theater is named the "Victoria Palace Theatre". We went to see the musical Hamilton. The "Victoria Palace Theatre" is a theater of the west End in Victoria Street, in the city of Westminster in London, the lights and the performance were amazing. We could clearly hear what they were singing and their moves were coordinated and really well prepared. This theater is really spacious; it has a capacity of 1550 persons spread over 3 floors. Hamilton was released for the first time on 20 January of 2015. This musical is set in the 18th century.

On the way to the theater, some problems arose on the subway. Leaving one of the subways we found a group of younger boys. A fight almost broke out, they were looking at us in a provocative and violent way. After that, they followed us and we had to detour for a while to lose them. The latter caused a delay and we were almost late for the performance. To get there on time, we had to run through the streets of London, it was very fun.

The musical opened with Alexander Hamilton, the main character, arriving in New York City. The story revolves around him having a difficult childhood, meeting her wife and accepting a position as George Washington's right hand man during the Revolutionary War. A few years later, about his return to America being the US ambassador to France, having the first major sex scandal in American political history with Maria Reynolds, people blackmailing him because of it, and then his son's death and ending up being killed by his best friend in a duel because nearing the end of his term as vice president, Burr ran for the governorship of New York but lost. Again, he blamed Hamilton for besmirching him as a candidate, and, eager to defend his honor, challenged Hamilton to a duel. Hamilton accepted and the rest is history.

Hamilton goes a step beyond from what we have seen from any musical. We all truly adored it: the music, dances, clothing and special effects really caught our eye. You could clearly tell the actors are professionals and put in the effort to do an incredible job. To do a performance like that for multiple nights a week and nail it every time is extremely admirable.

To be able to watch this in a theater was definitely one of the most extraordinary experiences of the whole trip.

Telling this non-modern history in a modern way is brilliant. It brings out every emotion as well; you feel sadness, joy, excitement, surprise, etc. The technical aspects are, as well, exceptionally well produced. The costumes are probably the visual highlight of the show. But the set design it's also very remarkable. We were just so impressed. They also managed to make this piece of History way more interesting and creative for someone who don't care about it

An element that was also crucial for us was the location; Victoria Palace Theatre is truly beautiful and a place we'll never forget.
